| | Ok, so the title is a bit misleading. #44 *actually* reads: "Talk Brian into letting me get one of my tattoos and actually *get* the tat".
....He's out of town this weekend. He found out after the fact.
I'll be honest with all of you. Brian is very anti-tattoo. I am very pro-tattoo. This has actually been a pretty big point of contention in our relationship since the very beginning. I have several tats that I want. Before we got married, I couldn't afford to get tattooed, so it was kind of a non-issue. He knew I wanted them though, and I knew he didn't like them. Then we got married, and "my money" and "his money" became "our money". And since he pays all the bills and does our finances and such, when he said, "No, you may not spend our money on tattoos," he actually had some pull with that.
A while back, I realized I had a pretty decent chunk of change growing in my PayPal account from The Happy Hippie. Enough to get one of the tattoos I wanted. And here's where I come clean with all of you. While I didn't exactly plan to get a tattoo *this weekend*, the opportunity presented itself, and me with my *very own* hard-earned money, I went ahead and did it, and....called Brian to tell him afterwards. I don't recommend this tactic.
My friend Ashley went and got her tongue pierced at the same place earlier today, after I'd told her how much I wanted to get my tat. She told me she'd go with me if I decided to go. I thought about it for most of the day, and finally, at about 7pm, I headed out to pick her up.
We headed to The Aloha Monkey and I signed the necessary paperwork, and before I even realized what I was doing, my tattoo artist, Marx Barry (Just to warn you, if you visit his gallery on the website, he likes naked woman tattoos!), had my stencils lined up and was getting the guns ready. I was terrified, to be honest! Within about 20 minutes, it was all over with! And let me tell you, if you're going in for your first tattoo, your inner ankle is probably not the best place to do it! I was well aware of the fact that it's one of the more tender places on a person's body, and I'm still glad I went ahead and did it, but if you've got a low pain tolerance (which I don't. I actually have a pretty high pain tolerance) try somewhere fattier! I could definitely tell when he was going over bone, and as he got towards the back of my ankle, it was really sensitive and hurt like hell.
I didn't watch when he started, because I was already apprehensive enough about it, but I did watch quite a bit toward the end, and it was pretty fascinating! They don't allow pictures of the process, so I can't show you. I didn't realize how much ink actually got *on* the skin. The needle goes in, and the ink kind of sits on the surface of the skin, and they're continually wiping it away, so there's ink everywhere. It was different than what I'd thought it was like. Then he got it cleaned off, and I did bleed a bit, but not real bad, so Ashley came over and checked it out and really liked it! All in all, we were only there for about a half hour. Once he got me all bandaged up, I was having a hard time walking, and I probably will tomorrow too, but we managed to get to Walmart to get me some ointment for it.
So now that you've heard all about the process, check out the result!!!
It's still pretty swollen and puffy at this point, and I'll definitely be posting pictures of the healing process as it goes. But I did it! The three stars represent three people who I've lost in my life that have affected my life in a profound way: my grandpa; my best friend, Becky; and a dear friend that I lost in high school, Billy. Each of them affected my life strongly while they were here on Earth with me before they left. It's exactly like how I wanted it, and it's a simple enough design that should I choose/need to add more stars in the future, that option is definitely open to me. I'm very impressed with the result!
(Yes, Brian seemed pretty ticked when I called and told him, for those that were wondering.)
Hopefully, if all works out well, I will be getting more ink in the future! (Preferably with Brian's consent next time!)
